THE RON PETTIGREW ATHLETIC CITIZENSHIP AWARD

 

The Ron Pettigrew Citizenship Award will be awarded annually to one individual from a member of RHSAA school. The award is in honor of Ron Pettigrew, a teacher, coach, and former Commissioner of Athletics who passed away in April of 2000. It consists of a $500.00 scholarship and a gift of student art from a Regina high school.

 

CRITERIA FOR THE RON PETTIGREW AWARD

  • All applicants must be graduating students.
  • All applicants must be eligible as determined by the RHSAA Constitution and Bylaws.
  • The competition for this award is open to both male and female applicants.
  • Individual students may apply, or students may be requested to apply by schools. An application form is available from the school’s athletic director or guidance counselor or available online at RHSAA website.
  • Applicants must be exceptional citizens within their respective schools in the areas of academic standing, attendance, dedication, and positive and exemplary attitude.
  • Applicants must have competed in at least one RHSAA sanctioned sport in each of

grades 10, 11 and 12. (This includes athletes, managers and trainers.)

   (a) An applicant must have demonstrated the following during his/her participation in high school athletics:(a) placed the team ahead of the individual athlete. A winner of this award would be someone who is prepared to sacrifice for the good of the team;

       (b) displayed an appreciation and respect for athletics;

       (c) understood the importance of sportsmanship;

       (d) valued the benefits to be gained through competition.

  • Each applicant must submit a resume of activities and 2 (two) character references. One reference must be from a high school coach and the other from a classroom teacher. These two letters must address the criteria listed above and discuss how he or she is a good citizen.
  • The recipient must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution in the fall of the year in which the award was won. Payment of this award will be made upon proof of post-secondary enrolment.
